Zoilo Almonte: Is New York Yankees Outfield Prospect Ready for September Callup?

For an MLB prospect, there is nothing cooler than getting that big call to the show. This is especially true when the prospect is called up in the heat of a pennant race.
For New York Yankees outfield prospect Zoilo Almonte, that phone call from higher headquarters cannot come fast enough.
Yet another undrafted free agent by the Yankees (in ’05), this 23-year-old is making a push to join legends in the Bronx.
Already a member of the Yankees 40-man roster, Almonte has raised his game with each promotion through New York’s system.
A minor league All-Star selection the past four years, Almonte looks like he has put everything together this year.
Playing for Double-A Trenton, this smooth-swinging switch-hitter from the Dominican Republic is batting a respectable .281 (108-for-385) with 20 home runs and 68 RBI. He also has 23 doubles and 15 stolen bases.
Almonte’s OBP/SLG/OPS is .327/.501/.828.
More impressively, in the past 10 games Almonte is batting .342 (13-for-38) with two home runs, eight RBI and an OBP/SLG/OPS of .405/.632/1.036.
Defensively, Almonte is still a work in progress, as the 6’0″, 205-pound righty has committed 11 errors in 236 outfield chances, per Baseball-Reference.com.
Nonetheless, looking at the big picture, he is showing signs of emerging as a quality ballplayer for the Yankees organization.
For a team that already boasts a healthy youth movement, having a budding star like Almonte (along with Melky Mesa, Mason Williams and Tyler Austin) should give Yankees’ fans hope for a bright future.
