New York Yankees: 23 Years Later, Lou Pinella Dons the Pinstripes Once Again

No, Joe Girardi has not been fired…though I still stand by my previous stance.

On June 26, as the Yankees finish a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies, something that has not been seen since 1988 will occur at Yankee Stadium.

Former Yankees outfielder and manager Lou Pinella will be wearing pinstripes once again as he makes his first appearance as a Yankee in 23 years.

It’s Old-Timer’s Day folks, and Sweet Lou isn’t the only one making his first appearance.

Bernie Williams will once again put on his familiar No. 51 and roam center field, although this is a new center field then the plot of grass he claimed ownership of for a decade.

Clay Bellinger will return, battling with Homer Bush as to who is the most irrelevant utility infielder of the past 20 years.

George Frazier, Brian Boehringer and Jose Cardenal will also be making their first appearances at Old-Timer’s Day and at the new stadium.

Yogi and Whitey will be there, as will Don Larsen, owner of the only perfect game thrown in the World Series.

Late Yankees Catfish Hunter, Elston Howard, Billy Martin, Bobby Murcer and Thurman Munson will be represented by their widows.

The “immortal” Kevin Maas will be in attendance. It makes you wonder where Hensley “Bam Bam” Meulens and Ricky “five-tool-player” Ledee are.

Mel Stottlemyre will not be coming back for another run as Yankees pitching coach, but he will be there as well.

Oh, did I mention that some guy who Mel is fairly close with will be there also?

I think he wore No. 6.

Yes, Joe Torre makes his triumphant return to the Bronx.

In pinstripes.

Given the acrimonious circumstances surrounding his departure and subsequent book in which he burned the many bridges leading to the Bronx, I for one had serious doubts that he would ever be “invited” to Yankee Stadium again.

It should be an exciting day, and the ovations for Torre and Bernie will certainly require earplugs.

You can see the list of all the attendees here.
