MLB Rumors: Rafael Betancourt Would Be Great Addition to Yankees’ Bullpen

The New York Yankees already started to tidy up for the stretch run with their acquisition of Ichiro Suzuki, but a deal for Colorado Rockies’ reliever Rafael Betancourt would add depth and experience to the bullpen.

The 37-year-old is 1-3 with a 3.00 ERA and 17 saves.

According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, “Rafael Betancourt is attracting varying degrees of interest from the Orioles, Yankees and Athletics. The Red Sox had interest earlier this month.”

Rafael Soriano has been great in place of the injured Mariano Rivera. He has 26 saves and a crazy 1.58 ERA, but you can never have too many arms.

Boone Logan, David Robertson, Cody Eppley and Clay Rapada have been strong, but if it’s one thing the Yankees know, it’s that you have to be greedy.

The Yankees still have the best record in baseball, but they haven’t been dominant over the last two weeks. The lineup took a hit with the injury to Alex Rodriguez, and solidifying their bullpen will only offer more support to a less-than-dominant rotation.

These starters need the bullpen to be stellar. Though the wins have come, only CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda have been truly consistent.

Ivan Nova and Phil Hughes may have a better or comparable records to Kuroda, but he’s arguably the Yanks best pitcher this season.

Betancourt would make an already solid Yankees bullpen even more formidable. A deeper pen would take even more pressure off the starters and make the Yankee juggernaut even stronger.
