Due to injuries, the Yankees have signed journeyman catcher Chad Moeller and infielder/catcher Robby Hammock to minor league contracts according to Chad Jennings of The Journal News . They are both expected to start the season in Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre.

Moeller, who played with the Yankees in 2008, was released by the Baltimore Orioles two days ago. He is expected to take the place of Mike Rivera, who is expected to be released after he dealt with a bad hamstring and struggled throughout spring training.

Hammock was signed because he can play both infield corners as well as catcher. He will be taking the place of infielder Jorge Vazquez, who is expected to open the season on the DL.

The Yankees needed to make changes behind the plate because they’ve dealt with minor injuries to both Jorge Posada and Francisco Cervelli. If these moves weren’t made and the minor injuries turned out to be worse than expected, or were aggravated, they didn’t want to rely on P.J. Pilittere to catch at the major league level.

Moeller, 35, played 30 games with the Orioles last season and managed to put up a 95 OPS+ while providing excellent defense. Hammock is known for catching Randy Johnson’s perfect game back in 2004. He last played in the majors back in 2008, getting into 18 games. He has a career OPS+ of 81 with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
