Derek Jeter left the game early yesterday and sat out today with a head cold, but The Captain fully expects to play in Tuesdays game against the Oakland Athletics according to Josh Thomson of the Journal News.

Here is more from Thomson:

The captain has a head cold that he has been fighting for the last two or three days. He was removed late in Saturday’s game despite picking up three more hits, including a homer, to extend his season-opening hitting streak to 11 games.

Jeter was asked if he wanted to play today. He answered the question with one of his own: “Whadda you think?” His response was implied.

With tomorrow off, the Yankees fly to Oakland, where they’ll begin a nine-game road trip on Tuesday night. Jeter was asked if he’ll return to the lineup then.

“Yeah,” he said. “I could’ve played today, but you have two days, so that’s pretty much it.”

Thoughts: This is really not a big deal and I think that yesterday’s home run shows that he could have played today if they had really needed him. Ramiro Pena filled in a did a great job for him. Not only is Pena defensively strong, but he had the go ahead RBI in today’s game.

I love that this team is so good that the fact that Jeter has missed 11 innings has actually become news. It’s also great to see that the Yankees have someone like Pena off the bench.
