Javier Vazquez Finally Has Strong Start, Loses Anyway

Javier Vazquez got his first quality start of the season and it was a good one, as he held the Tigers to just two runs and five hits, all singles, but still got the loss because he’s Javier Vazquez the offense was shutdown by Rick Porcello.
Don’t get me wrong, this was not a lights-out dominant start by Vazquez, but typically if you are getting starts like this out of your No. 4 starter then things should go well for your team. Like I said though, all of the hits Vazquez gave up were singles and all the Tigers’ offense came at once.
It really started in the bottom of the fifth inning when with two outs Vazquez gave up back-to-back walks before he struck out Adam Everett to end the inning. In the sixth Vazquez came back out and started off the inning by giving up a pair of singles to Austin Jackson and Johnny Damon before Magglio Ordonez picked up an RBI on a fielder’s choice. Miguel Cabrera then singled and Brian Boesch drove in another run on another single. Vazquez then settled down getting Brandon Inge to hit into a double play and retired the seventh inning in order.
That’s it, that was the offense from both teams for the day.
Notes
- The Yankees are standing pat as far as the roster goes for the second game of the double-header. So much for the mystery pitcher waiting back at the hotel.
- Derek Jeter went 0-for-4, dropping his average to .277 for the season.
- Brett Gardner went 0-for-3 with a stolen base.
- Mark Teixeira went 0-for-4.
- Alex Rodriguez went 0-for-4.
- Robinson Cano went 1-for-4.
- Jorge Posada went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.
- Nick Swisher went 1-for-4. He now has a .429 average and a 1.386 OPS during May.
- Randy Winn went 1-for-1 with 2 walks.
- Ramiro Pena went 0-for-3 playing third with A-Rod at DH.
- Javier Vazquez’s line: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 0 HR.
- Boone Logan’s line: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 0 HR.
Thoughts
- IT’S ABOUT TIME! It’s good to see a game like this from Vazquez, but he needs to be more consistent before I get excited about him. This is a sign that he can handle American League lineups, though.
- The Yankees were shutdown by Porcello, who had been struggling coming into today’s game. He woke up today with a 2-3 record and a 7.50 ERA.
- A-Rod and Jeter both hit balls that I thought were going to be home runs, but both barely stayed in the park. If either goes over the wall we might have seen a different ball game.
Line of the Day
Javier Vazquez’s line: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 0 HR. This is a little redundant, but I don’t think we can avoid it this time. Vazquez finally pitched a good game and it came after things got so bad that the Yankees skipped him against the Red Sox. Hopefully he can build off of this.
