Extended Yankees Notes: A-Rod, Burnett, Posada, Pettitte, and More

We’ve been dealing with quite a few issues with our host here at Bronx Baseball Daily, but we have a new one and everything should be running smooth from here on out. So, as usual, expect regular updates.
Here are the notes from a busy weekend that we missed:
- The Yankees are finishing up a four-game Friday-Monday series against their rivals, the Boston Red Sox. So far they have taken two out of three and have one more to play at 2:00 pm today.
- They lost on Friday 3-6, but won Saturday 5-2, and had another 7-2 victory last night.
- After this weekend they have a two-and-a-half game lead over the Rays, and a seven-game lead over the Red Sox.
- Javier Vazquez lost the only game of the series and afterward, we found out he’s been dealing with a bit of a dead arm.
- The big news is that Alex Rodriguez had to miss Saturday’s game after he was hit on the leg by a Lance Berkman line drive during batting practice. X-Rays were negative and he was back in the lineup last night.
- Between that an a 2-for-22 skid since joining the Bombers, Berkman had been experiencing his fair share of booing at the stadium. That was before he went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored last night.
- Derek Jeter picked up a couple of hits yesterday that put him ahead of Babe Ruth at No. 39 on the all-time hits leader-board. With his next hit he’ll be tied with Mel Ott for 38th place with 2876 hits.
- A.J. Burnett was scratched last night with back spasms.He’s expected to pitch Tuesday against Texas.
- Dustin Moseley made an emergency start in place of Burnett and was impressive. He went 6.1 innings and allowed just two earned runs. He’s not 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA.
- The plan for Jorge Posada over the remainder of the season is to start him behind the plate just three out of every five games.
- The plan for Andy Pettitte, who has been out with a groin strain, is that he’s expected to throw a bullpen today. If that goes well he’ll toss a simulated game later this week and then he’ll be sent to the minors for a rehab start early next week. If that goes well, he’ll be back in the rotation late next week.
- Finally, minor league 2B David Adams, who has missed significant time with a broken ankle, is not expected to play in the AFL this year.
I know that’s a lot, but I wanted to cover as much as I could from this weekend. A few thoughts: Vazquez will be fine, he might have won had it not been for Francisco Cervelli dropping a pop-up.
Berkman won’t be a .900 OPS guy, but he won’t be a 2-for-22 guy either. Jeter is the man and so is Moseley, but not quite in the same way. It sucks giving Cervelli so much playing time. It will be good to have Pettitte back. And iPage, our former host, sucks. We had problems with them from Day 1.
