Derek Jeter is looking to make a complete break from the New York Yankees in retirement. The legendary shortstop confirmed that he won’t be in attendance at Yankee Stadium when the Bronx Bombers open their 2015 MLB season against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 6.

“I think actually I’ll be out of the country,” Jeter revealed Saturday on SiriusXM Radio, via MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. “I need to get away. I’ve been playing this game professionally for parts of 23 seasons, so I need to get away from it.”

Jeter, 40, retired after playing 20 seasons with the Yankees from 1995 to 2014, playing more games and recording more hits than any other player in franchise history, according to Baseball-Reference.

Jeter will likely make a few sporadic appearances every now and then at Yankee Stadium over time, but he seems content to remain retired and put baseball behind him. Keeping busy shouldn’t be a problem, either.

He helped found The Players’ Tribune, and Hoch listed a few of the other ventures Jeter is pursuing with his playing career done, one of which is an eventual ownership share in a major American sports team.

Although he missed Opening Day in 2013 as he recovered from injury, it will still be strange seeing the Yankees take the field for the first time in 2015 with another player at shortstop. Between Jeter’s departure and Mariano Rivera’s retirement a year earlier, the organization is in the midst of transitioning into a new era.
