Clubhouse Confidential Rips Alex Rodriguez and Joe Torre but Not Derek Jeter

Luis Castillo was the last of the New York Yankees‘ batboys that wasn’t required to sign a confidentiality agreement. He wrote a book, Clubhouse Confidential: A Yankee Bat Boy’s Insider Tale of Wild Nights, Gambling, and Good Times with Modern Baseball’s Greatest Team, that raises some questions.

The New York Post provided some interesting information that Castillo claimed was true. The paper that many place in the same category as the supermarket tabloids started out with Castillo’s experience with Alex Rodriguez, followed by a great Derek Jeter anecdote and some revealing information about Joe Torre.

According to the book, A-Rod’s “personal assistant” had to place the slugger’s toothbrush on the edge of the sink near the right-hand cold water tap. The bristles had to be over the basin.

Castillo wrote, “The first time he ordered me to do this, I couldn’t believe my ears when he said, ‘And put some toothpaste on it.'”

Ah, yes, winning certainly isn’t the only thing.

Continuing to lambast A-Rod, the book claims that after he hit a home run, which has not been often in 2012, Rodriguez would brag about it.

“Wow, did you see I hit a home run? That pitcher threw me a ball right over the plate and I smashed it over the fence. Did you ever see anything like that before?”

Derek Jeter apparently is every bit of what fans think he is.

Castillo wrote about the time Bill Clinton, who had been out of office a few months, entered the Yankees’ clubhouse. Many of the players treated Clinton with the respect that they thought he deserved.

When Jeter saw him, the captain stopped briefly on his way out to the field.

“Hey, Mr. President, you staying out of trouble?”

Joe Torre didn’t escape Castillo’s word processor either. Everyone agrees that gambling is bad. It is really bad for some former players that became managers, but not for others.

Only one thing could distract Torre from the game; he was interested in horses.

Late one season, according to Castillo, Torre told him to go down to his office. “I want you to check the score on the Off-Track Betting channel and see who won,” Torre said.

“Make sure you find out the exact track and horse,” he added.

Castillo followed orders. Clubhouse attendant Joe Lee, when he saw Castillo, told him why there was a television in the manager’s office.

“Don’t you know why he’s got that TV in his office? It’s usually just tuned to one channel.”

“What’s that, the YES Network?”

“No, the OTB station.”
