The Yankees have gotten pretty lucky this preseason as far as injuries go, but today they got their first scare, as Alfredo Aceves will have his scheduled appearance tomorrow canceled due to a sore back. He’ll also be getting the next few days off.

Manager Joe Girardi said that he’ll get the next few days off but would probably be ready for Opening Day. It does seem that they could be leaving open the possibility that he won’t be ready for Opening Day.

According to Chad Jennings this problem originally started back in September last season, and Aceves even saw a doctor about it in January. Girardi said that this is something the team may have to monitor throughout the season.

This opens the door for lefty reliever Boone Logan to make the team. He’s probably in line to get the job if Aceves starts the season on the disabled list, but it’s possible the Yankees could start the season with Phil Hughes in the minors, as they won’t need a fifth starter for the first couple of weeks. The Yankees could then carry Logan as the eighth reliever as insurance for Aceves.

Fellow lefty reliever Royce Ring is also another possibility to replace Aceves if he were to miss time, but it’s not very likely due to the roster situation. See, Logan is on the Yankees’ 40-man roster, and Ring isn’t. In order to put Ring on the active roster, they would have to waive somebody like Jonathan Albaladejo.

It probably also leaves the Yankees at least somewhat regretting getting rid of Chad Gaudin too soon, but they’re probably not that upset. This could be something that lingers for a little while, but it certainly isn’t going to knock Aceves out for an extended period of time. They also have Sergio Mitre, who can take the place of Aceves as the team’s primary long reliever.

If injuries caused the need for even more depth, the Yankees could always dip into the minors for replacements like Jason Hirsh, Zach McAllister, or even Ivan Nova.
