Almost eight years after it happened, Derek Jeter’s home run could possibly be one of the greatest sports moments of all-time.
After the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York, people all over the world turned to baseball to help take their minds off the tragic events that occurred.
It seemed like the Yankees were meant to play in that World Series. In 2001, the New York Yankees had stopped being just New York’s team, they were America’s team.
Derek Jeter was one player that helped console people whose hearts were hurt from the terrorist attacks, by giving them a game to remember.
The Yankees played the Arizona Diamondbacks that year in the World Series. Due to the postponement of several baseball games, because of 9/11, the World Series partly ended up being played in November.
In the middle of Derek Jeter’s at-bat in Game Four, on October 31st, the clock struck midnight and the calendar turned to November.
The Jumbotron at Yankee Stadium read “Attention fans, Welcome to November Baseball.” This was the first baseball game ever played in the month of November without it being an exhibition game.
Derek Jeter made that change to November even more memorable by crushing a 3-2 pitch from Byung-Hyun Kim over the short-porch in right-field and becoming Mr. November.
There was Mr. October for Reggie Jackson and now another Yankee takes another month for himself. Michael Kay saw a sign in the stands that read Mr. November and was the first to give the nickname to Derek Jeter as he called the home run.
This year Derek Jeter has another chance to have people call him Mr. November as the postseason schedule has just been released. The playoffs begin Oct. 7 for both the ALDS and NLDS.
The World Series is slated to have games four through seven in November. The American League has home-field advantage in the 2009 World Series.
The Yankees have been doing great this season and if all goes well they could find themselves in the World Series. This would provide Derek Jeter with the perfect opportunity to defend his title of Mr. November.
Who would have ever expected or imagined a small kid from Kalamazoo, Mich., to come up clutch at such a big moment in sports history.
As of 2005, Derek Jeter’s post-season batting average has been above .300. He could go down in history as one of the most clutch players of all time.
The Yankee Captain has provided fans with many moments that will be forever kept in their memories. He had the amazing diving catch into the stands against the Red Sox. He also comes through time and time again with mid-air throws that always seem to be on target.
Derek Jeter has the stats to be recognized as one of the best players in baseball history and his character off the field will help even more.
Jeter is a great player all around. It will be entertaining to see if he gets the chance to be Mr. November again.
