The New Yankee Dynasty

Joe Girardi may as well change his jersey number to 30 right now.

Monday night, the Yankees have a chance to leave Philadelphia with their 27th World Series title in hand. Thus fulfilling Girardi’s goal he set out to accomplish when he replaced Joe Torre, and intentionally wore the number 27.

The New York Yankees just appear to be much better than a great Phillies team who have nobody other than Cliff Lee to stop the Yankees lineup. If he manages to delay the inevitable, then we can just keep the champagne on ice until Wednesday where the city will be in full parade-preparation mode.

And for the legion of Yankee haters out there, more bad news. This is just the beginning.  Much as the Yankees of the ’90s led by Derek Jeter and Joe Torre were baseball’s dominant franchise, it appears they are ready to rise again, just in time for the new decade.

For a team that is always willing to go out and get top tier free agents, they are also wise enough to keep key pieces once they are brought in. The Yankees have three players who have been in New York for 15 years each: Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, and Mariano Rivera.  By contrast, the dean of my beloved L.A. Dodgers would be Jonathon Broxton, who has been there all of five years.

And with some of their current contracts, the Yankees have key pieces like Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, C.C. Sabathia, and A.J. Burnett wrapped up for years to come. The other great news for Yankees fans is that none of these players are over 34 years of age.

Right now this team has the perfect balance of older leaders who have been there before, and superstars in their prime hungry for a championship. As those guys like Rivera and Posada fade into retirement they will be replaced by Yankees who are getting winning experience now. Players like Molina, Joba Chamberlain, and Robinson Cano will be those solid players that seem to define Yankees Champions.

And if the Yankees should falter a little bit, well who doubts that they will go out and get the next up and coming superstar like a Justin Upton, or Matt Kemp in 2011, or somewhere along those lines. Good players from the Pirates or Royals always need somewhere to go.

For now the Yankees need one more game to win No. 27. But it already seems like a mere technicality. The New Yankee stadium didn’t have to wait long to get a banner of it’s own. And with guys like Jeter, C.C., Tex, and the others, they better start making room for more.
