Sabathia Walks If He Can’t Beat Boston in Series Opener Tonight at Fenway

CC Sabathia is one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball. But this year, he hasn’t been able to do the one thing he was signed to do as a member of the Yankees: beat the Boston Red Sox.

So far in 2011, Sabathia is 0-4 with a 7.20 ERA. He has more losses against Boston than he does against any other team he’s thrown against. His 17 wins to this point mean very little unless he can beat Boston in the series opener tonight at Fenway Park.

As the Yanks and Red Sox face off in a battle for first place in the American League East, the Yanks enter the series with the most on the line. If Sabathia has trouble against Boston tonight, look for CC to take his talents elsewhere in the offseason, as he is eligible to opt out of his contract with New York. With four years and just under $100 million still on the table, Sabathia could get a raise if he decides to opt out and test the free agent market.

Cliff Lee signed a deal that pays his $25 million a year with Philadelphia, and it only makes sense that Sabathia will ask for something along those lines, possibly even higher.

Tonight’s game will have a huge influence on his decision. If Sabathia can’t beat Boston, why stay in New York?
