Reactions to Posada’s Brawl

In what would otherwise been a rather meaningless loss against the Blue Jays last night, Jorge Posada made it interesting when he started a brawl after he threw an elbow at Toronto pitcher Jesse Carlson in retaliation to getting thrown at earlier in the inning.

Here are the reactions via Peter Abraham:

Joe Girardi: ““We’ve already had a discussion,” he said. “I told them there is a lot at stake here and we can’t afford to get anyone hurt or lose anyone or get people suspended. We can’t do that.”

Infamous umpire Jim Joyce: “As he ran past Carlson, he gave him a little shove with his elbow. It was very unsportsmanlike. The pitcher wasn’t looking for anything like that and he ran past him, didn’t say anything and just gave him a shove with his elbow. It was very unsportsmanlike. It was cheap shot.”

Jorge Posada: “It’s something that shouldn’t happen, you know? You’ve got to carry the weight and hopefully we can end it tonight…It’s hard to compose yourself,” he said. “I don’t want my kids to see that. Hopefully they won’t.”

Hearing Joyce’s words makes me think two things. First, that it is unusual for to make comments on these types of situation and he probably should have kept his mouth shut. Especially after his recent issues with the Yankees. Second, that Posada is as good as suspended if the words “unsportsmanlike” and “cheap shot” are included in his report.

Hopefully he can get it over with in time for the playoffs.
