New York Yankees: Stock Up, Stock Down for Top 10 Prospects for Week 8

In the eighth week of the 2014 season, the New York Yankees visited the Cubs and White Sox for six games in which they went 3-3.
Around the farm, the Nos. 5 and 8 prospects, Eric Jagielo and Greg Bird, impressed for the High-A Tampa Yankees.
The top prospect, Gary Sanchez, went deep for his fifth time in Double-A Trenton. His teammate, No. 4 prospect Mason Williams, showed glimpses of emerging from his offensive slump and added three stolen bases to highlight his value in the system.
But any Yankee, at the big league level or the farm, would have struggled to top No. 7 Aaron Judge’s week for Low-A Charleston. In his ongoing professional debut, the right fielder went 12-for-26 with two homers and three doubles.
During the week, the Bombers also saw their AL East lead slip and disappear to the smoking Toronto Blue Jays (six straight wins, including 11 of their last 13), who ride a two-game margin heading into the final week of May.
The Windy City road trip did create a few positives, though.
Despite losing the opening game, 6-1, they scrapped for a 4-3 victory in 13 innings to split with the Cubs. On the South Side, they dropped the first two by a combined score of 9-7, then took the third, 4-3, in resilient fashion yet again in 10 innings.
On Sunday, they closed out another split series in a dominating 7-1 performance led by winning pitcher Masahiro Tanaka (6.2 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K), who moved to 7-1 (2.29 ERA) on the year, and things were capped off by a 4-for-5 day from the honored guest, Derek Jeter.
The Bombers continue to patch together their rotation, bullpen and positional depth as they look toward the long summer stride and MLB‘s July 31 trade deadline. They’ll be wise to keep continued tabs on the top talent of the farm system should they be ready to pull the trigger on one or more in-house promotions.
