New York Yankees: Robinson Cano’s Father Confident Son Will Remain in Bronx

There’s an old saying that some of you might have heard.

“Dad knows best.”

Whenever my late father gave me advice or said something, I always listened.

I wonder if Robinson Cano was listening when his dad spoke on Monday.

According to Wallace Matthews of ESPN New York, Jose Cano thinks his son will remain with the New York Yankees for his entire career.

Last week, the Yankees made what was called a “significant offer” to their 30-year-old second baseman, who is set to hit free agency after 2013:

Cano recently left the Yankees down in Tampa to take part in the 2013 World Baseball Classic and play for the Dominican Republic squad; his dad is also one of the coaches on the team.

Cano is set to make $15 million in 2013, but with Scott Boras now representing Cano, he is looking to get the second baseman a huge payday.

Some have felt Boras could look to get something similar to Joey Votto’s 10-year, $225 million deal with the Cincinnati Reds or Prince Fielder’s nine-year, $214 million deal with the Detroit Tigers.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post feels that the Yankees’ offer could be somewhere in the range of seven years and $171 million, which would pay Cano annually around $24 million per season.

In the report by ESPN, Cano’s dad feels that his son will sign either a six- or seven-year deal.

The latest we had heard on the significant offer was from Jon Heyman of CBS Sports and WFAN, who had said the Yankees and Cano were far apart in negotiations:

Cano, however, isn’t thinking about the contract negotiations between him and the Yankees and just wants to focus on baseball.

And I’m sure Cano is focusing on helping the Yankees win a fifth straight American League East title and getting them back to a fifth straight postseason berth.

But then again, who knows? Maybe dad does know best and knows something we all don’t.

For now, though, we all continue to wait and see what happens between Cano and the Yankees in the future.

Stay tuned, Yankees Universe.
