Johnny Damon on New York Yankees: “I Think It’s a Perfect Fit”

In an interesting turn of events, Johnny Damon spoke out on his current unemployment.

Jon Heyman reported that Damon does not understand why he has not received any calls to play baseball in 2012. He spoke about his potential role in the Bronx if the New York Yankees gave him a call.

“I think it’s a perfect fit,” Damon told Heyman. “But for some reason you have the year I had, especially with a team that has trouble scoring, and you can’t even get a call to continue playing.”

Damon hit 16 home runs last season with 73 RBI and 19 stolen bases. And he did not even receive an offer from the Tampa Bay Rays to continue playing for them.

It is further shocking that the Yankees, who are shopping for a left-handed bat, have not even called Damon.

It is assumed that Damon wants to have an everyday role in his pursuit of 3,000 hits; it would not hurt Brian Cashman to pick up the phone and make a call.

Now is the best time for Cashman to make a push for Damon. Damon has said he has not received any calls, so there is no competition for him. Perhaps he will allow the Yankees to pay him less than he expects.

It is stunning that a player of Damon’s caliber has not been contacted this offseason.

Even if he only plays against righties, Damon should be able to contribute with similar production as he did last season.

Damon’s swing is perfect for Yankee Stadium.

Being a part of a high-powered offense in comparison to the offense he was a part of last year would not hurt either.

It is ludicrous that the Yankees have not contacted him. While New York continues to ponder Raul Ibanez and Hideki Matsui, they should do all they can to assure that they have the best team possible in 2012.

That team should include Damon.

Damon continues to remain positive even when it appears that every team in Major League Baseball is disrespecting him by not giving him a chance. “Hopefully it rings soon, and whether it rings in a few minutes or a few weeks, I’ll be ready with the bat.”

I would sign up any day for a veteran who still has pop and has proven he can handle the bright lights of the City.
