Joe Girardi Won’t Go: Chicago Cubs Sign Mike Quade To Be Manager

From Buster Olney:

“Breaking news from ESPNChicago: Mike Quade is getting a two-year deal to stay as the Cubs manager.”

This is a point of notice for New York Yankees fans, who were keeping an eye on the Cubs’ managerial position because Yankee skipper Joe Girardi was considered to be on the short list of candidates for the job. With the spot now going to someone else, the threat of the Yankees losing their manager to a 100+ year loser is gone.

There was also some speculation that former Yankees manager Joe Torre might consider the job, but that always seemed like little more than speculation. The Yankee legend seems perfectly content to “retire,” except for the ideal situation, and never in the history of baseball have the Chicago Cubs been considered an ideal situation.

However, the big loser in this one is Girardi. It doesn’t matter whether or not he had any interest in ever managing the Cubs; the fact is that Joe’s contract with the Yankees is up at the end of this season, and having the Cubs job open could have been a major negotiating point when it came down to the number of zeros on his next deal.

We still expect the guy to be paid handsomely, but today’s events in Chicago will certainly have a butterfly effect.
