According to Peter Abraham of the Journal News, the Yankees have promoted outfielder Freddy Guzman to the majors and assigned pitcher Ian Kennedy to triple-A Scranton.

freddy-guzmanIn order to make room for Guzman on the 40-man roster the Yankees have designated Anthony Claggett for assignment and he’ll now have to clear waivers to remain under the team’s control.

Guzman has a .544 OPS and a .213 average in 89 at bats in 37 career games in the big leagues. He hasn’t been in the majors since an eight game stint with the Texas Rangers in 2007. This season he has played 101 games for four different major league team’s triple-A squads.

His numbers in triple-A this season have not exactly been pretty. He’s hitting just .223 with .272 OBP, .294 slugging percentage, and a .567 OPS over 350 at bats.

Kennedy made his first start since aneurysm surgery earlier this season. He threw two innings for the Tampa Yankees and he didn’t give up any runs, just one hit and one strikeout.

Kennedy is expected to go three or four innings pitching this Wednesday for the Scranton Yankees. I suppose it’s not out of the realm of possibilities for him to get called up to the Bronx if this goes really well. That isn’t likely though. Instead he’ll probably pitch in the fall instructs league before going to the Arizona Fall League. He’ll be able to salvage some of this season after all.
