Can Yankees Make Their Hat More Famous Than Jay-Z Can?

Those living in New York City, Jay-Z fans, or just music lovers in general will no doubt be familiar with my title, kind of.
If you’re not, and you’re about to take in what’s sure to be a fantastic 2009 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies , then you soon will be.
The line is taken, and slightly altered, from Jay-Z’s hit song ‘Empire State of Mind’, which is all set to be the Yankees’ 2009 anthem.
The original line is “I made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can.”
Step up Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and C.C. Sabathia, along with the rest of the Yankees team, that will take to the diamond for the World Series to try and take back that hat of theirs.
Jay-Z , an avid Yankees fan and regular at Yankee Stadium, will take to the diamond on Wednesday night, ahead of Game One, to perform the song in front of a full house.
It’ll no doubt send the watching crowd into a frenzy, as if they weren’t already, and hopefully send inspiration to Jeter and company, or not so, for those wanting the Phillies to make it two World Series in a row.
Will the Yankees be able to make their hat more famous than Jay-Z can?
Their first World Series ring since 2000 surely should be able to do just that.
The New York native will be at the back of everyone’s minds, far down the pecking order of that of the Yankees line-up for a short time at least, should Joe Girardi’s men complete their fantastic season with a 27th World Series crown.
And he won’t be complaining, not unless the Yankees somehow manage to bring out a hit record that will challenge him at the top of the charts.
But although “Empire State of Mind” is an anthem and an anthem only, the hit song couldn’t be more apt for a Yankees squad who celebrated their 40th AL pennant thanks to a Four games to Two victory over the L.A. Angels of Anaheim .
The chorus “In New York, concrete jungles where dreams are made of/there’s nothing you can’t do/now you’re in New York/these streets will make you feel brand new/big lights will inspire you/let’s hear it for New York” can’t fail to inspire.
But as soon as Jay-Z and Alicia Keys (who’s featured on the hit single) leave the diamond ahead of the starting pitch, the Yankees will need to take centre stage and perform as well in Yankee Stadium as Jay-Z does in the music industry.
I never thought I’d be quoting Jay-Z in my writing, but there’s always a first.
Maybe “99 Problems” could be next on the agenda? Hopefully not…
