Most athletes have good luck charms and superstitions.
Lucky socks. Not changing their underwear. Rally monkeys. Beards during playoffs.
But Alex Rodriguez had a lucky charm and superstition in one, according to Yankees fans anyway.
Kate Hudson was the “thing” that made A-Rod great in the 2009 season, helping him lead the Yankees to win the World Series.
She was always around, and during the playoffs could be seen in the stands or even in the special dugout seats.
This morning they reportedly broke up.
So what happens now? Does A-Rod go back to being just an okay player?
Do the Yankees go back to not winning the World Series?
Does Kate have to give back the gold “13” necklace he gave her after they won?
I can’t answer these questions, but it did make me wonder about other superstitions.
Remember when the new Yankee Stadium was being built and a Red Sox fan working on the site buried a David Ortiz jersey in the concrete?
So not to have the stadium cursed, and for various other reasons, the jersey was dug up and sent to a museum. The worker wanted to curse the Yankees.
Former Yankee Wade Boggs was famously known for eating chicken before every game. So much so he became known as the “chicken man.” He also woke up at the same time every day, took exactly 100 ground balls in practice, and had a slew of other superstitions.
There are also general baseball superstitions, like the “no-hitter” superstition.
If a pitcher is in the process of pitching a no-hitter, it is bad luck to to mention that it is in progress. The superstition has gone so far some broadcasters will not mention the event but will rather have a camera pan in on the scoreboard.
Unlike many other aspects of life, there is no No. 13 “curse” superstition (hence how and why Alex Rodriguez can wear the number).
But the most famous superstition is the “Curse of the Bambino.”
After the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees in the 1919 offseason, it was believed selling him was the reason behind the Red Sox failure until their World Series win in 2004.
Before the sale, the Red Sox were one of the most successful teams in baseball, winning the first World Series and five more after that.
So does Kate need to stick around for the Yankees to stay as good as they were last year?
No way.
That’s why we have Jay-Z. He’ll never leave his Yankees.
