The trade deadline has come and gone, and as expected, the Yankees were mentioned quite a bit. But talk is cheap. What the Yankees could have done and what they did and what they could have done are two totally different things. Yet what they didn’t do could, and probably does have much more of an impact than what they did do. In this piece you will find a break down of what the Yankees decided to do at the deadline and things they didn’t do that they were rumored to do and things that they probably should have done. I will give a letter grade to each trade, made or not made, and then give an overall grade for the deadline. This list also includes moves the Yankees made after the trade deadline, waiver moves.
With the highest payroll in all of baseball, the Yankees are always rumored to be doing something to make their lineup or pitching rotation even better. There were rumors of some pretty high profile players landing in New York. What they ended up doing might have disappointed you, but you can’t change the past.
Over the past few seasons, the Yankees have been active at the trade deadline, but haven’t necessarily acquired superstar, top of the line talent, though you could make that argument for Bobby Abreu. The point is that they haven’t went out and gotten a Roy Halladay over the past two or three seasons, so they probably weren’t going to do it this season, especially since they were in first place at the time that the deadline approached.
Even if they didn’t make a huge, earth shaking move at the deadline, the Yanks feel confident that the moves they made would benefit the team (why else would they make the trades?).
