With a two-bagger in the ninth inning of Sunday’s 2-1 win over the Texas Rangers, Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees passed Lou Gehrig to take sole possession of the all-time franchise record for doubles, per MLB Stat of the Day.

Jeter recorded the milestone hit against Rangers reliever Neal Cotts with one out in the ninth inning of a scoreless game. Following an intentional walk of Yankees outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, Cotts got out of the jam by coaxing designated hitter Carlos Beltran to hit into a double play.

The Yankees would later win 2-1 in 14 innings thanks to a walk-off RBI single from third baseman Chase Headley, who was acquired from the San Diego Padres earlier in the day.

The dramatic victory made Jeter’s milestone all the more memorable after the longtime Yankee shortstop recorded the 535th double of his illustrious 20-year career.

While he may not stack up to Gehrig, Babe Ruth or Mickey Mantle in some of the more prominent power categories, Jeter holds a slew of all-time Yankee records.

Most notably, the 40-year-old shortstop is the franchise leader in hits (3,413), stolen bases (355), singles (2,554), games (2,690) and at-bats (10,971).

Now in his final season, Jeter ranks second in Yankee history with 1,910 career runs, 49 behind the 1,959 compiled by Babe Ruth in pinstripes. Accounting for his modest .326 on-base percentage this season, Jeter has no real shot to catch the Sultan of Swat with just 63 games remaining in the Yankees’ season.
