The 2009 MLB Draft signing deadline is tomorrow, and I’m excited to see which signability guys the Yankees end up signing. I am very confident first round pick Slade Heathcott and 2nd round pick JR Murphy will sign. If they don’t, the Yankees do not recieve compensation picks for next years draft.
I’ll be back tomorrow with a deadline update.
AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
Hitters
Kevin Russo, 2B: 20 AB, 9 H, 2 2B, 2 HR, 6 BB, 4 K, .450/.577/.850 – had a great week, hit his first two homers and was on base every game. Raised his OBP to .400 and his SLG to .406.
Reegie Corona, SS: 17 AB, 1 H, 2 K .059/.059/.059 – Just has not been able to solve AAA pitching at all this season. In 365 AA plate appearances, he has a .368 wOBA. In 98 AAA plate appearances, he has a .172 wOBA.
Austin Jackson, OF: 25 AB, 7 H, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 BB, 7 K, .280/.296/.400 – I got a lot of flack when I suggested that Austin Jackson was getting very lucky and wasn’t having as good of a season as it appeared. Since I made this post, his BABIP has regressed and he is now fighting to keep his batting average over .300.
Shelley Duncan, OF: 16 AB, 4 H, 1 HR, 2 BB, 5 K, .250/.333/.438
Juan Miranda, 1B: 24 AB, 11 H, 4 2B, 2 HR, 2 BB, 5 K, .458/.500/.875 – he’ll be a welcome bat off the bench in September when rosters expand.
Pitchers
Russ Ortiz, SP: 1 GS, 7 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 6 K, 3 BB – has not allowed a run in 13 Triple-A innings.
Ivan Nova, SP: 1 GS, 4.1 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 4 K, 3 BB – has not gotten the hang of AAA yet after breezing through AA early in the season.
Jason Hirsh, SP: 1 GS, 6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 1 BB – The Yankees acquired him from Colorado for a PTBNL, but apparently Mike Francesca thinks he is made up. Hirsh is an interesting reclamation project; he was once rated a top 100 prospect by Baseball America and is still only 27.
Anthony Claggett, SP/RP: 2 G(1 GS), 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 3 BB
Romulo Sanchez, SP: 1 GS, 3.1 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 3 K, 3 BB – has been starting for over a month now.
Zachary Kroenke, SP/RP: 1 G, 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 4 K – his stock has been rising consistently for a while now.
Mark Melancon, RP: 2 G, 3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 3 K
Edwar Ramirez, RP: 1 G, 1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER
Jonathan Albaladejo, RP: 2 G, 2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 K – Triple-A ERA now sits at 1.26 with a WHIP of .73 in 28.2 IP.
Kevin Whelan, RP: 1 G, 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 K – good to see that he didn’t walk anyone. He has walked 9 in 6 innings since being promoted to AAA. Walked 28 in 54.2 innings in AA.
Michael Dunn, RP: 2 G, 3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 K, 4 BB – his walk rate has been rising all season.
Damaso Marte, RP: 3 G, 3 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 K – I’m sure the Yankees would like to see more strikeouts from him in AAA.
News and Notes
Josh Towers will return to the mound and start tomorrow for Scranton.
Damaso Marte’s rehab period has finished and he has been given leave from the team for personal reasons. I wonder what the Yankees do with him from here. He is on the 60-day DL so a roster spot would need to be opened up for him.
I haven’t heard any updates on Francisco Cervelli but he did not return this week. He has been out with a left hand injury that was not considered serious, but he has not appeared in a game since August 3.
AA Trenton
Hitters
Austin Krum, OF: 15 AB, 4 H, 2 2B, 4 BB, 4 K, .267/.381/.400
Matthew Cusick, 2B: 23 AB, 6 H, 2 2B, 3 BB, 3 K, .261/.370/.348 – Yankees received him from the Astros for LaTroy Hawkins and he has recently been called up to AA. He has struggled in his first 29 PAs, hitting .240/.345/.320.
Eduardo Nunez, SS: 24 AB, 8 H, 1 2B, 2 BB, 2 K, .333/.385/.375 – He had been known for his prowess with the glove, but he has managed to hit .301 so far this season.
Pitchers
Zach McAllister, SP: 1 GS, 5 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 3 K, 0 BB – really has put together a great age-21 season in AA: 2.91 FIP, 80:27 K:BB in 101 innings and a ground ball rate of 50 percent.
Ryan Pope, SP: 1 GS, 5 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 5 K, 3 BB – that makes it 13 consecutive shutout innings for Pope.
Wilkin De La Rosa, SP: 1 GS, 6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 5 K, 4 BB – 13 consecutive shutout innings for him as well.
Jeremy Bleich, SP: 1 GS, 5 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 3 BB – up to about 130 innings on the season after only throwing just 61 last season, so I’d expect him to be moved to the bullpen or have some starts skipped the rest of the way.
Lance Pendleton, SP: 1 GS, 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 2 BB – his first good start in AA after giving up 10 ER in his first 9.2 IP.
Humberto Sanchez, RP: 2 G, 2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 K, 0 BB
Kanekoa Texeira, RP: 2 G, 5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 8 K, 1 BB – He’d have been promoted to AAA by now in almost any other organization.
A+ Tampa
Hitters
Daniel Brewer, OF: 20 AB, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 K, .100/.217/.100 – Rough patch after winning player of the week last week.
David Adams, 2B: 21 AB, 5 H, 4 BB, 4 K, .238/.360/.238
Damon Sublett, CF:12 AB, 2 H, 1 2B, 1 BB, 3 K, .167/.231/.250
Brandon Laird, 3B/DH: 21 AB, 9 H, 3 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 3 BB, 3 K, .429/.480/.952 – starting to hit like it is 2008.
Austin Romine, C: 21 AB, 3 H, 1 2B, 1 BB, 4 K – .143/.182/.190 – really needs to learn how to take a walk. 23:66 BB:K on the season.
Pitchers
David Phelps, SP: 1 GS, 6.1 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 1 BB – first time giving up more than 1 run since July 14th.
Pat Venditte, RP: 2 G, 5 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 8 K, 1 BB – his strikeout numbers continue to be ridiculous. 35 Ks for Tampa in just 23 IP.
News and Notes
D.J. Mitchell hasn’t pitched since August 6th. This is probably since he has racked up 122.1 innings already on the season. He threw 98.2 innings for Clemson last year.
A Charleston
Hitters
Corban Joseph, 2B/3B: 18 AB, 6 H, 2 B, 1 BB, 3 K, .333/.400/.444
Addison Maruszak, SS: 10 AB, 3 H, 1 HR, 2 BB, 1 K – his first home run of the season.
Garrison Lassiter, 3B: 15 AB, 2 H, 1 2B, 1 BB, 5 K
Pitchers
Andrew Brackman, SP/RP: 1 G, 2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 4 BB
Manny Banuelos, SP/RP: 1 G, 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 5 K, 0 BB – I expect a lot of lines like this from Banuelos in the bullpen.
Jairo Heredia, SP: 1 GS, 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 1 BB – Has made four starts for Charleston and reminded us why there was hype surrounding the current 18-year-old last season. He has maintained a FIP of 2.67 in 19 IP while striking out 17 and walking 1.
Rookie Staten Island
Kyle Higashioka, C: 15 AB, 4 H, 1 BB, .267/.353/.267 – 18:24 BB:K so far in 165 ABs, pretty nice.
Adam Warren, SP: 1 GS, 5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 3 BB – Had just rolled off four straight starts without issuing a walk. He has now struck out 32 and walked only 6 in 42.2 IP. The 2009 4th round pick out of UNC has impressed so far.
Arodys Vizcaino, SP: He left his start on August 8 with a back injury, and I haven’t heard anything since. Hopefully there won’t be any long term issues with this issue. The 18-year-old was becoming one of my favorite prospects as he dominated the NYPL.
