The New York Yankees acquired infielder Casey McGehee from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for reliever Chad Qualls right before the trade deadline on Tuesday, according to Joel Sherman.

While the Bombers already have Eric Chavez to fill in at third base for the injured Alex Rodriguez, McGehee adds some extra depth to the bench and can also be used to play a little first base while Mark Teixeira deals with a wrist ailment.

McGehee’s numbers have steadily declined since he finished fifth in the National League Rookie of the Year race will Milwaukee in 2009. He hit .301 with 16 homers and 66 RBI that season, but he was batting just .230 with eight blasts and 35 runs batted in for Pittsburgh this year.

Nevertheless, the Yanks didn’t have to give up too much for him because they were probably going to send down Qualls later this week anyway with Joba Chamberlain expected to return.

In the end, the Yankees added Ichiro Suzuki and McGehee but missed out on Ryan Dempster, who was traded to the Rangers at the last minute (per ESPN).

New York really could have used the right-hander to solidify a rotation that currently doesn’t include Andy Pettitte and gets very questionable after C.C. Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda.

The Yanks will have to hope Pettitte returns at 100 percent because the Rangers and Angels are going to be very tough come October.
